IMPLEX
IMPLEX Version 4.1 - Another Leap Forward
For its users, IMPLEX represents one of their smartest investments in systems management software. Its powerful,
real-time network monitoring and alerting capabilities ensure that TCP/IP network availability can be maximized wherever
it is implemented.
The announcement of IMPLEX incorporates a significant number of product enhancements and additions. These
changes extend the capabilities of IMPLEX in the areas of network monitoring, network data display and the control
and collection of network data.
Enhanced Network Monitoring
IMPLEX sees the addition of new network monitoring capabilities with associated expansion in the levels
of detail relating to network traffic. These include:
- Significantly enhanced connection-related detail - IMPLEX now displays inbound and outbound buffer sizes, buffered bytes inbound and outbound, congestion window size, number of times local and remote windows closed to zero, maximum send window size, connection identifier and a count of out-of-order packets
- Changes to Threshold Configuration - the process of defining threshold limits for various network resources has been streamlined and is both simpler to understand and easier to implement
- A new 'Threshold Discovery' feature - IMPLEX takes the guesswork out of setting appropriate threshold values since it will 'learn' the threshold values for a given network resource by monitoring all associated connection, throughput and other associated performance criteria
- A new Stack List View - provides a full Stack View of the entire system including all sysplexes, all LPARs and all stacks
- Enhanced FTP throughput analysis - shows details of the last 256 FTP connections
- Significantly enhanced levels of detail for both UDP and TCP Listeners
- The introduction of a new, fully-functional MIB browser and an associated MIB display for OSA devices
- A more timely and accurate reflection of connection status
- A new, dynamic interface monitor providing full support for both application and dynamic VIPA
- Support for IPv6 inbound connections for the Browser client and focal point connections
Enhanced IMPLEX Displays
The most significant display enhancement is the introduction of a completely new primary panel - The Application View.
The Application View provides connection and activity statistics for each of the VTAM and TCP socket applications to which
users connect. From the new Application View, IMPLEX users can drill down into the subnets and connections that are
accessing the application and so analyze connections and traffic in a completely new way. Users will quickly and easily
be able to determine the applications which are servicing the most users as well as the applications that are the most
active in their z/OS system.
Data in all the primary views (i.e. Alert, Service, Interface, Activity, Connection, Gateway and Application Views) can
now be sorted according to user preference so that the display is presented in the most useful way and installations which
have a significant volume of Enterprise Extender activity can take advantage of improved sorting capabilities in the
EE Activity and EE Nodes displays.
Enhanced IMPLEX Control
IMPLEX offers the user a number of control improvements in the way data is presented or collected. For example:
- Connection related messages may be filtered and, optionally, suppressed or forwarded to avoid console congestion
- TN3270 Response Time Monitoring has been made more granular by enabling response time ranges to be defined with a decimal place
- A z/OS console command interface has been added to enable operating system commands to be issued from and received to the IMPLEX panel
- Week-ends are user definable and are no longer assumed to always fall on a Saturday and Sunday
